Pregnant women with diabetes in pregnancy did have a 7-fold risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea. The study that published in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism highlights the number of mothers who had diabetes during pregnancy is also suffering from snoring and sleep apnea.

gestational diabetes

Diabetes is thought to be caused by obesity in women. And recent data also indicate that snoring and sleep apnea can be one of the factors that led to a metabolic disorder which eventually lead to diabetes in pregnancy. Sleep apnea itself, if not treated will increase the risk of heart - vascular disease, stroke and heart attack.

The team of researchers from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago found that nearly 75 percent of people with diabetes in pregnancy also snore and suffer from obstructive sleep apnea.

The study looked at 45 of pregnant women. 15 pregnant women with diabetes in pregnancy, 15 pregnant women without diabetes and the last 15 are really healthy. The results found a strong correlation between sleep apnea and diabetes. Pregnant women, who do not have diabetes, sleep longer and more sustainable without falter. Yes, if someone is suffering from snoring and sleep apnea, sleep process will falter due to recurrent spasms during sleep. So the sufferer wakes short-wake repeatedly in the bed without realizing it.

While this study looked at the relationship of gestational diabetes and snoring from different sides. Nevertheless, the conclusion remains the same, regardless of diabetes caused sleep apnea or sleep apnea caused diabetes, both conditions should be treated. Then the researchers suggest the mothers who had diabetes during pregnancy to examine the possibility of suffering from sleep apnea, and also pregnant women who snore to get monitor about the possibility of diabetes.
