The Virginia earthquake can be especially traumatic for children and youth. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake registered magnitude 5.8. The quake occurred near the small town of Virginia.

The structural damage of the earthquake in Virginia may become the most significant long-term prognostic factor determining psychological recovery.

Standard Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment in the U.S. often complicates therapies in which people recreate the memory of a traumatic event or reorganize how they think about a past event, in order to help them learn ways to relax and cope.

Although the Virginia earthquake may only last a short time, survivors can be involved with the disaster aftermath for months or even years.  Collaboration among the school crisis response team and an assortment of community and state is necessary to respond to the many needs of children, families, and communities following the earthquake.
